A dental bridge is a restorative dentistry treatment that replaces one or more missing teeth in your mouth. Think of it like a bridge that crosses over a gap. When you lose a tooth, it leaves a space. A dental bridge fills this space with a new artificial tooth that looks and works just like your natural teeth.
Dental bridges are fixed in place, which means they don’t come out like dentures. They stay in your mouth all the time, helping you eat, speak, and smile with confidence. Dr. Xuanyi Li creates each dental bridge specifically for your mouth, ensuring it fits perfectly and matches the color of your other teeth.
Missing teeth can cause many problems. When you have gaps in your smile, your other teeth may start to shift out of place. This can change how your teeth fit together when you bite and may lead to jaw pain. Missing teeth can also make it harder to chew certain foods and may affect how clearly you speak. Some people feel self-conscious about showing gaps when they smile.
A tooth bridge solves these problems by filling the space left by missing teeth. It keeps your other teeth in their proper positions and helps maintain the shape of your face. With a dental bridge, you can enjoy a complete smile again!
Types of Dental Bridges
Dr. Li offers several types of dental bridges at our Clarksville, IN office. During your consultation, he’ll help determine which type is best for your specific needs.
Traditional Dental Bridge
The most common type is the traditional dental bridge. This bridge uses the teeth on either side of the gap as supports. Dr. Li places dental crowns on these neighboring teeth, and the artificial tooth or teeth is attached to these crowns. Traditional bridges are very strong and can last for many years with proper care.
Implant-Supported Bridge
An implant-supported bridge is held in place by dental implants instead of dental crowns on natural teeth. Dr. Li places one or more titanium implants into your jawbone where teeth are missing. These implants act like new tooth roots and provide a solid foundation for the bridge. This type of bridge is very stable and helps preserve your jawbone health.
Maryland Bridge
A Maryland bridge (sometimes called a resin-bonded bridge) is used mainly for front teeth. Instead of using crowns, this type of bridge attaches to the backs of the neighboring teeth with special metal or porcelain wings. This is a more conservative option because it doesn’t require as much alteration of the nearby teeth.
Cantilever Bridge
A cantilever bridge is used when there are healthy teeth on only one side of the gap. This type of bridge isn’t as common as it once was, but in certain situations, it might be the right choice for you.
Dental Bridges vs. Dental Implants
When you’re missing teeth, you have choices for replacement. The two most common options are dental bridges and dental implants. Understanding the differences can help you make the best decision for your smile.
Dental implants are titanium posts that Dr. Li surgically places into your jawbone. They act like tooth roots and support crowns that look like natural teeth. Implants stand alone and don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support.
In contrast, traditional bridges use the teeth on either side of the gap for support. This means those teeth need to be prepared by removing some of their enamel to fit the crowns that will hold the bridge in place.
Implants tend to last longer than bridges, often a lifetime with proper care. The implant itself rarely needs replacement, though the crown on top might need replacing after 15-20 years. Bridges typically last about 10-15 years before needing replacement.
Caring for implants is simpler because you can brush and floss them just like natural teeth. Bridges require special flossing techniques to clean underneath the artificial tooth. While implants often cost more initially, they may save money over time since they last longer. Most dental insurance plans now cover at least part of implant procedures. Dr. Li can help you decide which option is best based on your oral health, budget, and personal preferences.
The Dental Bridge Process at Beechwood Dental
Getting a dental bridge usually takes two or three visits to our Clarksville office. During your first visit, Dr. Li will examine your teeth and gums to make sure a bridge is right for you. He’ll take X-rays to check the health of your jawbone and the teeth that will support the bridge.
If you’re getting a traditional bridge, Dr. Li will prepare the supporting teeth by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for crowns. He’ll then take impressions of your teeth, which a dental laboratory will use to create your custom bridge. Before you leave, Dr. Li will place a temporary bridge to protect your prepared teeth and maintain your appearance.
For an implant-supported bridge, the process starts with placing the implants in your jawbone. This requires minor surgery. After the implants have healed and fused with your bone (which takes a few months), Dr. Li will take impressions for your permanent bridge.
When your permanent bridge is ready, you’ll return to our office. Dr. Li will remove the temporary bridge, check that the permanent one fits properly, and then cement it in place. He’ll make any necessary adjustments to ensure your bite feels comfortable.
After getting your new bridge, you might notice that it feels a bit strange at first. This is normal and usually goes away within a few days as you get used to having the bridge in your mouth.
Caring for Your Dental Bridge
With proper care, your dental bridge can last for many years. Here are some simple tips to keep your bridge in good condition:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Pay special attention to the area where the bridge meets your gums.
- Floss daily, using a floss threader or special bridge floss to clean under the bridge. This helps prevent decay and gum disease around the supporting teeth.
- Avoid biting or chewing on hard foods, ice, or other hard objects that could damage your bridge.
- Visit Dr. Li regularly for checkups and professional cleanings. He’ll examine your bridge to make sure it’s still in good condition and fits properly.
If you notice any problems with your bridge, such as pain, looseness, or difficulty chewing, contact our office right away.
